Danish insurance company to launch its own MVNO

Danish insurance company Alka to launch its own mobile company

The Danish insurance company Alka, has announced it will launch its own mobile company, Alka Mobil, which according to the company will be Denmark's cheapest.


Alka enters the Danish mobile market, as a MVNO using the network of Telia/Telenor. The commercial launch is set for March 2021.

Alka Mobil is established as an independent company with Jess Mathiesen from Alka as CEO, and the new mobile company will initially have 20 employees. Jess Mathiesen has worked for Telenor and TDC Mobil before, as well as Mobile Value the company that enabled MVNOs like Waoo and Greentel.

The service will be available to approximately 2.5 million Danes (Population 5.8M), who are either customers of Alka insurance, a member of one of the unions with which Alka cooperates, or any persons in a households with an Alka insurance or a union membership.

Alka Mobil will offer free domestic voice call, SMS, MMS, as well as 7GB of data for DKK 59 (USD9.63) per month. User can add the EU package to the subscription, which will then be priced at DKK 84 (USD13.71) per month for 10 GB data (6GB in EU countries).

According to Alka CEO, Frederik Sjørslev Søgaard, Alka is not meant to make profit on mobile telephony. "It's all about being able to give our customers and union members some attractive benefits that make them happy and satisfied," he says.

Telecom is nothing new to Mr. Søgaard, his background include various roles, including VP of Mobile during his 11-years at the Danish incumbent TDC.
